چکیده

[1] New space-based observations of South Florida with interferometric SAR (InSAR) reveal spatially detailed, quantitative images of water levels in the Everglades. The new data capture dynamic water level topography, providing the first detailed picture of wetland sheet flow. We observe localized radial sheet flow in addition to well-known southward unidirectional sheet flow, modelled as a linear diffusive flow. We obtain quantitative estimates of flow diffusivity (23 – 91 m 2 /s), the first space-based estimates of such hydrologic parameter for the Everglades. Space-based hydrologic observations can provide critical information for monitoring, understanding and managing wetland sheet flow, and contribute to wetland restoration.

Evapotranspiration in the Everglades; Comparison of Bowen Ratio Measurements and Model Estimations

The Everglades in south Florida is a marsh system where most of the time wet vegetated marshes and open water features prevail. Rainfall and evapotranspiration (ET) are the main parameters in the hydrology of the Everglades. The delicate balance between rainfall and evapotranspiration maintains the hydrology system in either a wet condition or dry condition. Based on a literature review of both...

Advection, dispersion, and filtration of fine particles within emergent vegetation of the Florida Everglades

[1] The movement of particulate matter within wetland surface waters affects nutrient cycling, contaminant mobility, and the evolution of the wetland landscape. Despite the importance of particle transport in influencing wetland form and function, there are few data sets that illuminate, in a quantitative way, the transport behavior of particulate matter within surface waters containing emergen...

Stability of phosphorus within a wetland soil following ferric chloride treatment to control eutrophication.

Addition of iron and aluminum compounds has become an increasingly popular method to regulate phosphorus eutrophication in lakes and reservoirs. It has been proposed that ferric chloride addition to agricultural runoff entering the northern Everglades could provide a means for enhancing natural mechanisms of phosphorus removal from the wetland. In this study we added ferric chloride to Everglad...

Distribution and turnover of carbon in natural and constructed wetlands in the Florida Everglades

Stable and radiocarbon isotopic contents of dissolved organic C (DOC), dissolved inorganic C (DIC), particulate organic C (POC) and plants were used to examine the source and turnover rate of C in natural and constructed wetlands in the Florida Everglades. DOC concentrations decreased, with P concentrations, along a water quality gradient from the agriculturally impacted areas in the northern E...

Modeling Phosphorus Trapping in Wetlands Using Nonparametric Bayesian Regression

Phosphorus-enriched agricultural runo from the Everglades Agriculture Area is believed to have caused ecological changes in the northern part of the Everglades wetlands. A number of e orts have been made to assess the e ectiveness of using constructed wetlands as a means of phosphorus removal from the agricultural runo . The objective of this study is to develop a predictive model for the total...
